HEARTLAND AMERICA CATALOG PRODUCTION PHOTOGRAPHY

Project Insight

Catalog retail lives and dies by its imagery. Every product needs to be clear, compelling, and conversion-ready — shot cleanly, retouched precisely, and delivered on time. For Heartland America, that meant a relentless production cycle with no room for error and no tolerance for missed deadlines.

Opportunity

Heartland America produced a new catalog every three weeks, each requiring 50 to 70 products shot at four to five angles each. Beyond the studio work, the brand needed lifestyle imagery that felt authentic and aspirational — without always having the budget for a full location shoot. Vendor-supplied images arrived inconsistently and needed to be retouched, clipped, and standardized before they could go to press.

Approach

I managed the full production cycle from shoot through final delivery — photographing products, editing and color correcting images, clipping backgrounds, and compositing lifestyle scenes when location shoots weren't possible. I built a library of composite backgrounds sourced from parks, open houses, and beaches, giving the team a flexible toolkit for creating lifestyle context in post. When live lifestyle shoots were needed, I sourced locations, booked models, and directed sessions at off-site locations including the owner's pool house and kitchen. Vendor images were received, evaluated, and brought up to catalog standard before being handed off to the design team. When my own work was complete I stepped in as a backup graphic designer to help push ads and catalog layouts across the finish line before press deadlines. I never missed a deadline in seven years.

A Brand Campaign Based on Heart

Direct-to-consumer retail is a trust exercise. Customers ordering from a catalog can't touch the product — the photography has to do all the selling. Every image was built to answer the customer's questions before they thought to ask them: What does it look like in a real setting? How does it fit into my life? The composite background library made lifestyle storytelling possible at scale, giving products context and warmth without the cost of a full location shoot every cycle.

Key Outcomes:

  • Delivered 50 to 70 fully retouched, catalog-ready products every three weeks for seven years

  • Built a composite background library that reduced lifestyle shoot costs and turnaround time

  • Standardized and retouched vendor-supplied imagery across every catalog cycle

  • Directed model-driven lifestyle shoots at off-site locations

  • Maintained a perfect on-time delivery record across the full seven-year engagement

Client Testimonial:

Jason was the most dependable person in the building. No matter what was happening, the work was done, it was beautiful, and it was on time. Seven years and never once did he let us down." — Sue M., Marketing Manager, Heartland America
